Mining companies require portable structures that are easily transportable to very remote locations, particularly in mining environments like outback Australia.

Exploration mining camps are small and temporary, so they don’t need too many facilities, just the bare necessities.

These include:

  • Portable Offices
  • Mobile Ablution Units
  • Shower Units
  • Portable Accommodation

Aside from the structures themselves, they will need a dry, relatively flat and mould-free environment to put them on.

After their use, these structures must then be easily removed and moved, allowing for the natural return of the area’s biological system to its former resilient and sustainable state.

Portable Office

This is where most of the paperwork such as recording, communication and note-taking takes place – vital for any mine site.

Portable offices come in various forms. Some are refurbished shipping containers or even air-hangar-style dome tents. More semi-permanent ones look like demountable classrooms – which are usually for larger, longer-lasting mine sites – while shorter stay sites will often have small, more nimble buildings that may be able to be towed by vehicle to site instead of being craned in.

Mobile Ablution Units

Mobile ablution units – as you may have seen at festivals or other large events – are quite popular for short stay mine sites. They are easily transportable and can be used between a small team of people whilst staying clean.

Shower Units

Shower units usually come as ‘shower blocks’ on larger mine sites, and will include ablution units contained within. Separate ones, for smaller operations can easily fit into a trailer or be part of a caravan accommodation set up, where a caravan is repurposed into a well-functioning shower and toilet combo. Both are able to be easily transportable to hard-to-get-to sites.

Portable Accommodation

Purpose-fit-for-mining exploration caravans are becoming increasingly popular for short-stay sites for miners.  Some tend to be larger than your normal caravan and usually have 3 or 4 separate bedrooms alongside a living or dining area with a kitchen. If you don’t have other portable ablution units or shower units, you can get them fitted with a fully functional bathroom. They can also be fitted with air-conditioning, laundry machines and satellite TV and internet.

These exploration caravans come fitted with all the safety requirements a house usually does, such as fire and smoke alarms as well as fire extinguishers and blankets.
